Exploring Central Europe

After Australia, I felt like there were parts of Europe I wanted to explore.

I had only really considered certain cities in Europe as separate trips. Nonetheless, on this trip I learnt how easy it is travel between them, experiencing more countries in just a single trip.

So, here is a small 5 night itinerary for Central Europe. This could be used as a mini break or incorporated into a larger ‘travelling Europe’ trip.

First stop; Budapest, Hungary. (2 nights)

This city is best known for its thermal baths, unique stunning architecture all situated along the stunning setting of the Danube River.

I had 2 nights here, I recommend taking a trip over the Chain Bridge, using the funicular up Castle Hill to Budas Old Town, taking in views from Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion! Take a dip in one of the many thermal baths, the Rudas Baths has a great roof top hot tub overlooking the city.

Next stop; Bratislava, Slovakia. (1 Night)

It took me by surprise, this is a much larger metropolitan city than I gave it credit for. Admittedly the 18th century old town is what holds it together, with open pedestrianised squares with bars and cafes lining the streets. However, take a wander up to the Bratislava Castle that over looks the whole town and the Danube.

  • Devins Castle
  • St Martins Cathedral

Last stop; Vienna, Austria.  (2 Nights)

This city felt unbelievably sophisticated and full of history. If you are one for museums or World War history – here is for you.

My favourite part was wondering and admiring imperial Vienna around the Hofburg Palace.

Also check out;

  • Schönbrunn Palace
  • Vienna State Opera
  • St. Stephen’s Cathedral
  • Museum Quater

Using the train to get between the cities was so easy and not to mention cheap! The trains in Central Europe put our train network here in the UK to shame. To travel from Budapest – Bratislava –  Vienna was 24€’s and took 3 hours (stopping over Bratislava for one night).

Central Europe felt rustic but yet unbelievably cultured and rich with history. I wish there was more time to add to the trip with a stop in Prague. But, there’s always next time…right?
