Stand up paddle – Yorkshire Coast

I was lucky enough to get a paddle board for my birthday last month, a Red Paddle Sport 11.3. And I’m in love. I have wanted one for a long time, whilst living in a flat and with no budget, I didn’t think it was possible. Until Alex surprised me the weekend before my birthday.

Above; here it is in all it’s glory, with our double height ceilings coming in useful.

On Easter weekend we had been blessed with some amazing weather and we took to the Yorkshire Coast. Filey, near Scarborough, our usual.

I was able to get out on the sea twice that weekend, both in the late afternoon sun and it was perfect for my first time paddling on the British coastline.

I parked up at Hunmanby Gap, by the Beach cafe, pumped up the board and walked down the steep path towards the beach.

Zipping up my wet suit for the first time, I waded into the sea. The waves were around 2-3ft. Getting out was harder than I thought but once I was over the break point I managed to get up onto the board, standing and off I paddled.

I paddled around but surfing back in was definitely the best part. I’d surfed a small amount before, but took me a while to get to grips on the paddle board, adjusting my feet.

This is definitely something I’d like to practise more and get better at!

The second day I got out the wave were only 1ft high and the sea was a lot calmer, this was great for paddling up and down the coast, taking sun bathing breaks a long the way. Just drifting there in the sun on the North Sea, who knew?!

I also had the pleasure of seeing a pod of dolphins in the distance. Just magical!

I can’t wait to get out on the ocean again – although I don’t know if I’ll be as lucky with the weather next time.
